Plot summary
Xchange is a biotechnology company whose mind transference lets people travel instantly by floating in bodies at the other end. Stuart Toffler, a privileged member of the corporate class, makes his first exchange to attend a San Francisco press conference in memory of Eisner Scott, a businessman killed by a drone strike. There he clashes with his ex-girlfriend Madeleine Renard, a consumer advocate critical of Xchange and the corporate class. The next day an Xchange executive, Allison De Waay, tells him that the assassin who took his body, a man named Fisk, has disappeared with it, and orders him confined to a genetically engineered clone body with a limited lifespan. Toffler escapes in a hijacked worker body whose time limit is shorter and less predictable, and returns to New York.
