Plot summary
Walker Baylor killed himself at 24, seven years before the story begins. His mother, Darcy, learns that Mark Wright took her son's business plan and now runs a chain of Hot Dawg shops in New Orleans, with ads that use a childhood memory of Darcy and Walker. Darcy wants to confront him. Her old boyfriend Clayton gives her the gun Walker used, and she and her friend Byrd Ritt drive toward New Orleans, stopping to visit friends of her son and her hometown friend Mary Lou, then Walker's father, now seventy and in a nursing home.
