Plot summary
Allan Topher develops an advanced robot, Code 328, at Kinetech Labs for search and rescue work. The company's president, Porter, intends to sell the machine as a weapon, and Allan is fired when he objects. Before he leaves the building, Allan steals Code 328 and deletes his files, and Porter's security team chases him. The robot is damaged in the pursuit and its parts end up in a garbage container, where 12-year-old Henry Keller finds them after hiding from a school bully. Henry carries the pieces home and rebuilds the robot, naming it Cody. With no memory of where he came from, Cody is welcomed into the household by Henry's mother Joanna and his sister Meagan.

- Producer Avi Arad chose New Orleans as the filming location because he knew the city from attending National Association of Television Program Executives conventions there in the 1980s and 1990s. He also picked it for its tax breaks and scenery, and the script was rewritten so the story recognizably takes place in New Orleans.
