Plot summary
John Nolan sells life insurance in Los Angeles and finds his own days dull. At a liquor store he watches a robber shoot Auggie Rose, an ex-convict working there on his second day, and rides with him in the ambulance. The police show little interest in tracing Auggie's family, so John starts asking about the dead man's past. He learns that Auggie served twenty years for armed robbery and that Lucy, a pen pal from the South, is due to arrive without knowing Auggie is gone. John tells his secretary he needs a leave from work. When Lucy reaches town and mistakes him for Auggie, he lets her believe it, moves into Auggie's apartment, and hides this second life from Carol, the woman he lives with.
