Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Silent Hill (2006)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Christophe Gans chased the rights to Silent Hill for five years, writing what he called a ton of letters that went unanswered. He finally made a 37-minute video with Japanese subtitles explaining his vision, it was played to Konami's board of directors, and the rights were his two months later.
- Screenwriter Roger Avary modeled the town on the real Centralia, Pennsylvania, where a mine fire released toxic gases and opened sinkholes until the town was evacuated for good. His father, a mining engineer, had told him the stories as a child, and the film's working title was Centralia.
- Sean Bean is in the film because the producers rejected the first script for having no male characters at all. Only after Bean's husband role and his subplot were written in was it approved; Avary remembered Gans being furious when the note came down from the studio.
- While writing, Roger Avary was getting mail from fans of the games telling him that only they could write the script and that if he failed he would be found and killed. He took the threats seriously. Unsolicited fan scripts arrived too, and he deleted them unread.
- Milla Jovovich and Meg Ryan both auditioned to play Rose Da Silva. The part went instead to the Australian actress Radha Mitchell, who had appeared in 2004 in Melinda and Melinda, Man on Fire and Finding Neverland.
SPOILER
The filmmakers planned to cast three different girls as Sharon, Alessa and Dark Alessa, then gave all three parts to ten-year-old Jodelle Ferland. She got them after telling her audition that she had always wanted to play the devil, and after Gans watched fifteen hours of footage of her earlier work.- To show his crew the camera language he wanted, Gans had a 40-inch television and a PlayStation 2 set up on the soundstage and played the original Silent Hill in front of the actors and cinematographers. He also had Akira Yamaoka, the game's sound designer, flown to the set several times.
