Plot summary
Poland, at the start of World War II. A snowstorm leaves Rachel, a rabbi's daughter, unconscious in the open, and she wakes in the care of Oscar Koenig, a German army officer whose assignment is to track down resistance fighters. He brings her back to health, and over those days the two fall in love, drawn together by the poetry Oscar composes. Rachel already has a fiancé, Bernard. The war separates Rachel and Oscar, and both want to find each other again, while Oscar's service under his father, General Koenig, keeps him scouting and the two disagree about the conflict.
