Biography
Julie Andrews is an English performer whose career spans theater, film, television, and voice work. Born in Walton-on-Thames, she sang in the West End as a child and appeared on radio in Educating Archie. After her Broadway debut in The Boy Friend, she rose to prominence as Eliza Doolittle in My Fair Lady and Queen Guinevere in Camelot. She won the Academy Award for Best Actress for Mary Poppins (1964), then starred in The Sound of Music (1965), earning a Golden Globe. Her later films include The Americanization of Emily (1964), Torn Curtain (1966), Thoroughly Modern Millie (1967), Victor/Victoria (1982), The Princess Diaries (2001), and The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement (2004). She also supplied voice roles in the Shrek and Despicable Me films and received multiple Grammy, Emmy, and Golden Globe awards.

First role
At 12, Andrews gave her first professional solo performance at the London Hippodrome. She sang the difficult aria "Je suis Titania" from Mignon in the revue "Starlight Roof" on 22 October 1947.
A role that slipped away
For the role of the English witch Eglantine Price in Disney's Bedknobs and Broomsticks, Andrews was the first pick, but the part went to Angela Lansbury.
Behind the award
In 1995 Andrews appeared in the stage musical Victor/Victoria, her first Broadway show in 35 years. She turned down her Tony Award nomination because she felt the whole production had been snubbed.
First role
In 1952, Andrews gave voice to Princess Zeila for the English version of the Italian animated film La Rosa di Bagdad, which was retitled The Singing Princess. It was her first film and her first voice-over work.
Big break
Andrews was cast as Eliza Doolittle in My Fair Lady after Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe offered her the part during her third reading.
A role that slipped away
Casting for the film version of My Fair Lady started in 1962. Alan Jay Lerner wanted Andrews to play her stage role again, but studio head Jack Warner felt she was not well enough known, so Audrey Hepburn took the part.
