Plot summary
The Pink Panther diamond is stolen from Lugash again, and Chief Inspector Clouseau is put on the case despite the objections of Chief Inspector Dreyfus. He travels to London to question Sir Charles Litton, and his flight to Lugash vanishes over the ocean. Marie Jouvet, a television reporter, then sets out to solve the mystery, interviewing people who knew the inspector, among them Dreyfus, Hercule Lajoy, Cato Fong and Sir Charles Litton.

- Sellers's widow Lynne Frederick sued the producers and MGM/UA for $3 million, claiming the film diminished his reputation, and was awarded over $1 million; her primary objection was that Sellers had vetoed the use of outtakes from earlier Panthers in his lifetime.
- David Niven returned as Sir Charles Lytton, the role he first played in the original The Pink Panther of 1963, but he was in the early stages of ALS and his voice proved too weak to loop his dialogue, so impressionist Rich Little dubbed his lines.
- Shooting in Valencia was guarded by the Spanish National Police Corps and the United States Secret Service because of the involvement of President Ronald Reagan's daughter Patti Davis.
- After Sellers died, UA tried to get Dudley Moore to take on Clouseau in the Sellers-penned Romance of the Pink Panther, but Moore refused to do it without Edwards directing and was willing to play the role only once, as a tribute to Sellers.
