Biography
Dick Van Dyke is an American entertainer known for acting, comedy, singing, dancing and writing. Born in West Plains, Missouri, and raised in Danville, Illinois, he began as a radio and television entertainer and nightclub performer. He made his Broadway debut in 1959 and won a Tony Award for Bye Bye Birdie (1960). On television, he became a household name as Rob Petrie on The Dick Van Dyke Show from 1961 to 1966, earning three Emmy Awards. His films include Bye Bye Birdie (1963), Mary Poppins (1964), for which he won a Grammy, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (1968), Curious George (2006), Night at the Museum (2006), Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb (2014) and Mary Poppins Returns (2018). He also starred in Diagnosis: Murder from 1993 to 2001. His honors include six Emmys, a Grammy, a Tony, and the Kennedy Center Honors in 2020.

A role that slipped away
In 1968, Albert R. Broccoli reportedly offered Van Dyke the chance to take over as James Bond from Sean Connery. Van Dyke turned it down, asking Broccoli, "Have you heard my British accent?"
Big break
Dick Van Dyke was cast as Rob Petrie in The Dick Van Dyke Show after Carl Reiner, who had played the lead in the pilot, chose him to take over the role when CBS insisted on recasting.
A role that slipped away
On Larry King Live, Van Dyke said he turned down the lead in The Omen, a part Gregory Peck played. He also said the Scarecrow in The Wizard of Oz would have been his dream role.
Behind the award
In 2024, Van Dyke was 98 when he took home the Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Guest Performer in a Drama Series at the 51st Daytime Emmy Awards, honored for his work on Days of Our Lives. He is the oldest nominee and winner of a Daytime Emmy.

Van Dyke created 3D-rendered effects for the Diagnosis: Murder episode "Down and Dirty Dead" and for The Dick Van Dyke Show Revisited. His computer-generated imagery work has been displayed at SIGGRAPH.
