Plot summary
In 1922 Millie Dillmount leaves Salina, Kansas, for New York City, her hair bobbed and her hems above the knee, with a plan: work as a stenographer, then marry the wealthy boss. She takes a room at the Priscilla Hotel for Single Young Ladies, where she befriends Miss Dorothy Brown, an orphaned would-be actress who arrives naive and old-fashioned. Millie meets Jimmy Smith, a paper clip salesman, at the hotel's Friendship Dance. She holds to her plan and lands a job at Sincere Trust, setting her sights on Trevor Graydon. Jimmy later takes Millie and Miss Dorothy to Long Island to meet the wealthy widow Muzzy Van Hossmere, whose gardener was Jimmy's father.
