Plot summary
Felix Farmer has made his first flop. Night Wind, a wholesome family picture he produced and that stars his actress-singer wife Sally Miles, loses Capitol studios millions, and the failure costs him his marriage and his sanity. He tries to kill himself several times, and each attempt fails. While he is catatonic or sedated, Tim Culley, Ben Coogan and Dr. Irving Finegarten stay at his Malibu house, where a party turns into an orgy. A glimpse of a young woman in panties gives Felix his answer: the film lacked sex. He talks David Blackman, who heads Capitol, into selling him Night Wind, using his and Sally's money, and wants to reshoot it as a softcore musical in which Sally, an Oscar winner with a squeaky-clean image, goes topless.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about S.O.B. (1981)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- The story of S.O.B. parallels what happened to Edwards and Andrews on Darling Lili: intended to reveal Andrews' heretofore unseen wicked and sexy side, that film had a troubled shoot, went significantly over budget and was subjected to postproduction studio interference from Paramount Pictures.
- Three years later, when Blake Edwards had his name removed from the writing credits of 1984's City Heat, he was billed under the pseudonym Sam O. Brown - S.O.B.
- Broadcast television prints contain alternate takes of scenes originally containing sex and nudity: in one, Robert Vaughn, as studio head David Blackman, is seen naked from the waist up in bed with his mistress Mavis, whereas in the original theatrical print he is wearing a bustier and nylon stockings.
