Plot summary
Gertrude Lawrence is two decades into a successful stage career when she sits in a screening room and watches a documentary about her life, compiled by Jerry Paul, who wants her critique. Her memories go back to Clapham, where in 1915 she left home to join her father, a vaudeville performer, and then to the chorus of André Charlot's West End revue. Her attempts to draw attention away from the other dancers irritate Charlot, who threatens to dismiss her, until stage manager Jack Roper steps in and has her taken on as understudy to the leads. She marries Jack. Noël Coward, a friend from her childhood, comes back into her life.
