Plot summary

The thousands of line drawings Al Hirschfeld made of famous people, many of them from the entertainment industry, span more than sixty years. His story runs from childhood and adolescence through those decades of work, and in his nineties he is still drawing. He speaks about his domestic life and about his political and cultural views, and he talks about himself, at times seriously and at times lightly. His only form of exercise, he says, is the stairs of his Manhattan townhouse, and he drives his car around the streets of Manhattan. Friends and associates appear in brief interviews and reminiscences of him.
