Plot summary
In 1938 Salzburg, Maria studies to become a nun at Nonnberg Abbey, where her enthusiasm and lack of discipline worry Mother Abbess. She is sent to the villa of retired naval captain Georg von Trapp as governess to his seven children: Liesl, Friedrich, Louisa, Kurt, Brigitta, Marta and Gretl. Since their mother's death the Captain has raised them with strict military discipline, and they have scared away several governesses with pranks. Maria answers their tricks with patience and kindness, sewing play clothes from old drapes and teaching the children to sing on outings through Salzburg and the mountains. When the Captain returns from Vienna with the wealthy socialite Baroness Elsa Schraeder and their friend Max Detweiler, he finds the household changed.

- The Munich branch manager for 20th Century-Fox approved the unauthorized cutting of the film's entire third act, the scenes showing Salzburg following the Anschluss; Robert Wise and the studio intervened, the original film was restored and the branch manager was fired.
- Kym Karath could not swim and nearly drowned during the capsizing boat scene. She was saved by Heather Menzies, but had swallowed so much water that she vomited all over her.
- The escape of the film's ending would not have been possible: Salzburg is over two hundred miles from Switzerland. In reality the von Trapp family simply walked to the local train station and boarded a train to Italy, from which they traveled to Switzerland, France and London.
- The film is one of a select number of western films allowed in North Korea, and when the Slovenian group Laibach visited in 2015 as the first western band to perform in the country, they played songs from The Sound of Music.
- Wise and Lehman went to Disney Studios to watch footage from the then-unreleased Mary Poppins, and a few minutes in Wise told Lehman: "Let's go sign this girl before somebody else sees this film and grabs her!"
- By November 1966 the film had become the highest-grossing film in history, surpassing Gone with the Wind, and it held that distinction for five years.
- Christopher Plummer did not provide his own singing voice in the finished film: in October his vocals were dubbed by Bill Lee, a veteran Disney playback singer.
- Wyler said he hated the stage show after seeing it, but after two weeks of Lehman's persuasion he reluctantly agreed to direct and produce the film version.
