Plot summary
Queen Narissa rules Andalasia, and her reign ends the day her stepson, Prince Edward, marries. She keeps him occupied hunting trolls and gives her servant Nathaniel the job of spoiling his search for a bride. Giselle, who lives in the forest and dreams of a prince, catches Edward's ear with her singing, and the pair agree to wed the next morning. Narissa appears before the ceremony as an old hag, shoves Giselle into a well, and the well delivers her to Times Square, where the city overwhelms her. Robert Philip, a divorce lawyer out with his daughter Morgan, lets her stay in their apartment, and Morgan is sure she is a real princess. Edward and Giselle's chipmunk friend Pip jump down the well after her.

- The script was written over three years but was thought unsuitable for Walt Disney Pictures because it was "a racier R-rated movie" inspired by Fast Times at Ridgemont High and American Pie; in the first draft Giselle was mistaken for a stripper on arriving in New York City.
- Disney had planned to add Giselle to the Disney Princess line-up, showing a Giselle doll at a 2007 Toy Fair with packaging declaring that status, but decided against it on realizing it would have to pay for lifelong rights to Amy Adams' image.
- Eleven versions of Giselle's wedding dress were made for filming, each using 200 yards of silk satin and other fabric and weighing about 40 pounds; Amy Adams called wearing it "grueling" since "the entire weight was on her hips".
- Director Kevin Lima says "thousands" of references to past and future Disney works are packed into Enchanted, and Walt Disney Studios took almost eight years to greenlight the film because it "was always quite nervous about the tone in particular".
- The only real animals filmed on set for the "Happy Working Song" sequence were rats and pigeons, used to help Tippett Studio create CGI pigeons that carried brooms in their beaks and rats that scrubbed with toothbrushes; all the cockroaches were CGI characters.
- Out of the 300 or so actresses who auditioned for the role, Amy Adams stood out to Kevin Lima because she looked like a Disney princess and for "her ability to escape into the character's being without ever judging the character".
- The musical number "That's How You Know" in Central Park was the scene Kevin Lima found most challenging to shoot: the five-minute sequence took 17 days to finish because changing weather allowed only seven sunny days of filming.
