Carol Channing
Biography
Carol Channing was an American actress, singer, dancer and comedian whose career centered on Broadway and film musicals. Raised in San Francisco, she made her New York stage debut in Marc Blitzstein's No for an Answer in 1941. She created Lorelei Lee in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes in 1949 and Dolly Levi in Hello, Dolly! in 1964, the role that won her a Tony Award. Her other Tony nominations came for The Vamp, Show Girl and Lorelei. On screen, she won a Golden Globe and was nominated for an Academy Award for Thoroughly Modern Millie (1967), and her other films included Skidoo (1968) and The First Traveling Saleslady (1956). The American Theater Hall of Fame inducted her in 1981, and in 1995 she was given a Lifetime Achievement Tony. She also worked often in television, playing the White Queen in Alice in Wonderland in 1985.

A first
Channing played Lorelei Lee again in the musical Lorelei, which opened in 1973 at the Oklahoma City Civic Center Music Hall. The show's six days of performances sold out in 24 hours and broke box office records.
