Biography

Julian Sands was an English actor, born in Otley in 1958, whose mother was a leading figure in a local amateur dramatic society; he trained at London's Central School of Speech and Drama. Small parts in Oxford Blues (1984) and The Killing Fields (1984) led to his breakout as George Emerson in A Room with a View, after which he moved to Hollywood. He took the title roles in Warlock (1989) and its sequel Warlock: The Armageddon (1993), and appeared in Gothic (1986), Arachnophobia (1990), Naked Lunch (1991), Impromptu (1991), Boxing Helena (1993) and Leaving Las Vegas (1995). On television he voiced Valmont in Jackie Chan Adventures, played the Doci in Stargate SG-1 and Jor-El in Smallville, and his solo stage piece A Celebration of Harold Pinter, directed by John Malkovich, brought a Drama Desk nomination in 2013. He died in 2023.

    Julian Sands voiced Valmont in seasons 1 and 2 of Jackie Chan Adventures, after which Andrew Ableson and Greg Ellis voiced the character in the remaining seasons.

    John Malkovich directed Sands in A Celebration of Harold Pinter, staged at the Pleasance Courtyard during the 2011 Edinburgh Fringe Festival. The production later moved to New York's Irish Repertory Theatre.
