Plot summary
The school where Andrew Crocker-Harris has taught Greek and Latin for nearly twenty years is retiring him on the pretext of his health, and his pension is in doubt. The other masters ignore or dislike him, and the boys fear his strict discipline while finding his lessons dreary. Laura, his younger wife, neglected by him, is unfaithful and looks to wound him; her affair is with Frank, an American science teacher more lenient with the boys than Andrew, yet able to reach them.
