Plot summary
Nick Deezy, a psychometrist who reads the history of events around an object by touching it, meets Sylvia Pickel, a trance-medium, at a study of psychics. Sylvia speaks with Louise, a wisecracking spirit guide who came to her after a fall from a ladder at twelve put her in a coma for two weeks. Her flirtatious manner turns Nick off, and her luck with men has been poor. One night Harry Buscafusco is waiting in her kitchen with an offer of $50,000 for a trip to Ecuador, where he says his son has vanished. Sylvia recruits Nick, who agrees, reluctant but glad to escape his museum curator's job, where his gift is treated as a circus act.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Aykroyd met with Lauper and decided he did not want to do the film; Columbia Pictures stood by Lauper, and Jeff Goldblum replaced Aykroyd in the part.
- Washington Post film critic Rita Kempley's negative reaction led her to question Ron Howard's judgement for involving himself with the production, writing "Ron Howard must have been in a trance when he agreed to back the project."
- Lauper said she did not want to play "a typical airhead version of what Hollywood thinks a woman is", nor an ultra-serious role, and described Sylvia as a girl very conscious of her appearance whose favorite color is leopard skin.
- Lauper said acting and performing music come from the same place but need slightly different techniques: to play Sylvia she had to tone everything down, because the exaggerated style that works in a big concert hall needs stillness for a movie camera.
