Plot summary
In 1671, with war against Holland approaching, the Prince of Condé, short of money, receives King Louis XIV and the court at Chantilly for three days of celebrations. The prince hopes the king will grant him a general's commission, so he spares no expense, and Vatel, who runs the household and stages the entertainments, is given tasks that are menial and dishonorable. Vatel has talent and a strong sense of honor but no noble birth. Anne de Montausier, the king's mistress, returns his interest, yet the strict hierarchy of the court leaves no room for a bond between a servant and a woman of her standing.
