Plot summary
Senator Larson Crockett has campaigned against magic, and by 1953 most of the country fears it and its use is illegal. In Los Angeles, the film star Kim Hudson asks the private investigator H. Phillip Lovecraft to find evidence against her husband, the producer N.J. Gottlieb, who plans to put a younger actress in her place in his next picture. Lovecraft's landlady, Hypolita Kropotkin, secretly works as a witch for Gottlieb's studio, where she pulls well-known writers out of the past to polish its screenplays. Finn Macha, a warlock and one-time investigator whom Lovecraft knows, stays at Gottlieb's side.
