Plot summary
In 1851, mutilated bodies appear in a village in Galicia, their wounds a mix of brutal tearing and careful surgical cuts. Talk of the Werewolf of Allariz spreads through the region, and the killings are blamed on a beast. Manuel Romasanta is a traveling vendor who moves along the roads with his wagon, and in each village along his way a woman waits for him. Bárbara, one of four sisters, falls in love with him. When Romasanta escorts her sister to the city, the young woman does not return, and Bárbara starts to mistrust the man she loves. The case draws a district attorney, Luciano de la Bastida, and a scientist, Professor Philips.
