Plot summary

Melanie Walker is a flautist preparing for an important orchestral concert under the conductor Gustafson when the death of the composer Katherine Fleischer leaves the program in disarray. Gustafson had intended to premiere Katherine's final concerto, but no score can be found. Melanie, who once studied with Katherine, offers to track the missing work down, though Katherine's sister Alice says the composer attempted to destroy the concerto and never wanted it performed. Melanie lets herself into Katherine's villa and takes the manuscript, whose final movement is unfinished. She is sure she can complete it in time. As she fills in the missing passages, the music begins to affect the people who hear it.
