Plot summary
Sophia Leonides comes to private investigator Charles Hayward with a suspicion: her grandfather, the tycoon Aristide Leonides, was murdered. Aristide died of a heart attack after the insulin injection his young wife Brenda gave him had been laced with the eserine in his eye drops. Charles, who had a brief affair with Sophia in Cairo, agrees to look into the death with the consent of Scotland Yard's Chief Inspector Taverner. At the Leonides estate, where the family lives together, he finds hostility and a motive for nearly everyone: Aristide bullied and manipulated them all, and each expects a bequest. Brenda, a former casino dancer, administered the fatal injection, and most of the family suspect her. Then Aristide's will turns out to be unsigned.

- The single fictional house at the center of the story was assembled from several real English properties: Minley Manor near Fleet, Hampshire supplied the exterior shots, while the interiors were shot at four different locations including Hughenden Manor, West Wycombe House and Tyntesfield, near Bristol.
- In 2011 a completely different version was announced: Neil La Bute directing for 2012 from a script by Julian Fellowes, with Gemma Arterton, Matthew Goode, Gabriel Byrne and Dame Julie Andrews announced to lead the cast.
