Plot summary
Emperor Claudius banishes Seneca to Corsica, then marries Agrippina. She asks Claudius to let Seneca tutor her twelve-year-old son Nero, and Seneca returns to Rome. He remains at Nero's side for years, exerting great influence over him, even after Nero becomes emperor. By 65 AD, Nero's tyrannical regime has reached its zenith. His self-indulgence and excesses stir up opposition, and conspiracies threaten his power; he defends his claim to sovereignty by any means. Nero has grown weary of Seneca, his former teacher and close advisor. When an attack on Nero's life is foiled, he accuses Seneca of being an accomplice.
