Plot summary
Thea Clayhill is the secretary to Jerry Steinwald, a cranky publisher, and she raises her younger sister Emma alone after their parents died in a car accident. When Jerry fires her following an accident with his dog, Thea cannot afford to lose the income. She claims she is four months pregnant, having seen on a television episode that firing a pregnant woman is discriminatory, and the claim saves her job. Her friend Lisa supplies a baby bump taken from a mannequin, and Thea keeps the pretense going while Jerry travels and his accountant brother Nick takes over at the office.
