Plot summary
Duane Hopwood is divorced from Linda, who has custody of their daughters, Mary and Katie, while he has visitation rights. He works the night shift at Caesars Palace, a casino in Atlantic City, New Jersey. One night he is stopped after swerving across the road, and Katie is found in the backseat. He is banned from driving, so Linda lends him a bicycle as his main way to get around. At the casino he gives a difficult customer, Mr. Alonso, a few quarters to keep playing the slots, and Alonso hits the jackpot. Linda tells Duane that Mary wants to talk with him, and that her lawyer has suggested revoking his visitation.
