Plot summary
Marcy Tizard works as an assistant to Senator John McGlory of Boston, whose re-election campaign is struggling. His chief of staff, Nick, sends her to Ireland to look for the senator's relatives or ancestors, hoping that an Irish connection will win over Irish-American voters. She reaches Ballinagra, a village preparing for its annual matchmaking festival, where two rival matchmakers, Dermot and Millie, take an interest in her. So does Sean Kelly, the local bartender, whose manners she resists. The villagers let Marcy get on with her genealogical search while arranging introductions to unmarried men. One singer performs a sean-nós version of Raglan Road for a kiss from her.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about The MatchMaker (1997)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Worked into the story is a parody of Senator John Kerry's family background: his paternal grandfather came from Eastern Europe, picked a new name once he arrived in America and blended into the Irish Catholic community in Boston.
- Filming took place on location in the town of Roundstone, County Galway, and the film builds a sense of place through village scenes, the local surrounding farms and a trip to the Aran Islands, with cavorting near Dún Aengus.
- Irish music is heard throughout, sometimes performed live, as when an Irishman played by Vincent Walsh competes for a kiss from Marcy with his sean-nós rendition of "Raglan Road".
