Plot summary
Clark, his father Mack and his mother Gina move from Brooklyn to a small town in Washington the summer before Clark starts sixth grade. Clark is biracial and the new kid in town, and almost everyone around him is white. He decides that acting more black is what it will take to be cool, and he fumbles at it. The three of them are a tight-knit family, and Gina and Mack, urban intellectuals equipped for New York, are unprepared for what their new community presents. At home in the suburbs, all three of them struggle to understand the others and themselves.
