Plot summary
Fifteen years after she was sent to a psychiatric hospital, Marina Hess is released to her sister Alice. As teenagers she and Rebecca Cline stabbed a classmate, an attack Marina believed would cure her mother's illness, since it was meant as a sacrifice to a ghost named Mercy Black. Stories about Mercy Black have since spread across the internet, and Alice's son Bryce is obsessed with them. Marina visits Rebecca, who took part in the stabbing. Bryce's behavior at school grows more erratic. Marina wants to keep Bryce from repeating what she did, and she questions whether Mercy Black was ever anything more than her own delusion.

- Writer-director Owen Egerton said he began researching childhood crimes after the Slender Man stabbing, and one inspiration for the story was Mary Bell, who had murdered two toddlers when she was a child and was given a new identity after her release from jail, until tabloid reporters found it out.
- Producers wanted the protagonist of Mercy Black to be innocent, but writer-director Owen Egerton told them the story depended on facing one's past.
