Plot summary
A New York theater company travels to Laramie, Wyoming, where Matthew Shepard, 21, was murdered. Its members spend two years in the town, recording more than two hundred interviews with residents, among them Shepard's friends and family, police officers and other townspeople. Actors portray the company's members on that visit, and they speak the words the residents recorded, while real news reports from the period appear alongside the interviews. Some scenes restage what the townspeople describe. The residents talk about their town, the murder and the attention the case has brought to Laramie, and the company gathers their accounts into a play.
