Jacki Weaver

Biography

Jacki Weaver is an Australian actress of stage and screen. She emerged during the Australian New Wave in the 1970s, making her big screen debut in Stork (1971) and winning her first Australian Film Institute Award. She went on to appear in Alvin Purple (1973) and Petersen (1974), and had a supporting role in Picnic at Hanging Rock (1975). She has performed in more than 80 plays and returned to film with Cosi (1996). Her performance as a gang family matriarch in Animal Kingdom (2010) brought international attention, an Academy Award nomination, and the National Board of Review Award. A second Academy Award nomination followed for Silver Linings Playbook (2012), and she made her Hollywood debut that year in The Five-Year Engagement (2012). She later played Marguerite Oswald in Parkland (2013) and appeared in Woody Allen's Magic in the Moonlight (2014). On television she starred in Blunt Talk and Secret City, and she has a recurring role in Yellowstone.

In 1963, when Weaver was 16, she mimed Gretel in an ABC staging of Engelbert Humperdinck's Hansel and Gretel. The soprano Janet Rutledge sang the role, and Sir Charles Mackerras conducted.
