Plot summary
Rex is a taxi driver in his seventies who has lived nearly his entire life in Broken Hill. He has friends there, and Polly, his Aboriginal neighbor, is close to him, though racial tensions keep him from pursuing more. A cancer diagnosis gives him three months at most, and he will not be committed to a hospital. Learning that Dr. Nicole Farmer has invented a euthanasia device at a clinic in Darwin, Rex contacts her and volunteers as its first patient. Because the practice is legal only in the Northern Territory, he leaves a will granting his house to Polly and starts the 3,000-kilometer drive north in his taxi.

The film is modeled on the true story of Max Bell, a taxi driver from Broken Hill who made the 3,000-kilometer trip to Darwin in 1996 seeking euthanasia. Like Rex in the film, Bell drove back, but he had been unable to obtain the signatures required and died slowly in a hospital, the fate he was trying to avoid.- The euthanasia device invented by the fictional Nicole Farmer in the film is based on Australian physician Philip Nitschke's Deliverance Machine, which was used legally in the Northern Territory while the Rights of the Terminally Ill Act was in effect.
