Plot summary
Tom, a sous-chef in San Francisco, and Violet, an experimental psychologist, get engaged after a year together. At their engagement party, Tom's friend Alex gets Violet's sister Suzie pregnant, and the two marry quickly. Violet's hopes for a post-doctorate at Cal fall through, but she is accepted into a two-year psychology program at the University of Michigan. Tom agrees to move with her, putting off the wedding and passing up a chef's job at a new restaurant. His boss had planned to name him head chef. In Michigan, Violet settles into her work, while Tom cannot find a chef's position and takes a job at a deli.
