Plot summary
India Stoker is eighteen and acutely sensitive to the world around her. Her father Richard dies in a car crash, leaving her with Evelyn, her emotionally unstable mother, in the family's rural house. At Richard's funeral the two meet Charlie, Richard's younger brother, a charismatic man who has spent his life traveling and whom India did not know existed. Charlie announces that he will stay on indefinitely to help support India and Evelyn, which delights Evelyn and unsettles India. The house's caretaker, Mrs. McGarrick, has known Charlie since he was a boy, and India witnesses the two of them argue.

- Wentworth Miller, mostly known as an actor, wrote the screenplay for Stoker as well as a prequel, Uncle Charlie, and used the pseudonym Ted Foulke for submitting his work, later explaining "I just wanted the scripts to sink or swim on their own."
- Before Mia Wasikowska and Nicole Kidman were ultimately cast, both Carey Mulligan and Jodie Foster were reported to be in talks to star in the film, and Matthew Goode was in talks to play Charlie only after Colin Firth, attached earlier, had to drop out.
- Composer Philip Glass was originally hired to compose the film's score but was replaced by Clint Mansell; two of Glass's compositions for piano are still included in the finished film, as revealed in the movie credits.
- Miller clarified that although Stoker was influenced by Bram Stoker's Dracula it was "not about vampires" and never meant to be, though it is a horror story: a stoker is one who stokes, which also ties in nicely with the narrative.
- On the 2010 Black List, a list of the best unproduced screenplays then making the rounds in Hollywood, Stoker finished in the top 10.
- Stoker is dedicated to the memory of its producer Tony Scott, who died after production on the film had wrapped.
