Plot summary
The Collective governs a society of members whose emotions have been eradicated, and sexual activity and feeling break its rules. Silas works as an illustrator for Atmos. One night he sees officials detain two citizens, which recalls an epidemic of Switched-On Syndrome, a condition that restores emotion. At work the next day, a worker jumps to his death and the others assess it without feeling. Silas alone notices Nia reacting. He becomes distracted and has a nightmare, and a check-up brings a diagnosis of Stage 1.
