Plot summary
Malorie Hayes is pregnant when reports arrive of unexplained mass suicides spreading across Asia and Europe. When the panic reaches her city, she flees with her sister Jessica and sees people around her kill themselves. Tom pulls her off the street and into a house where Douglas, Greg, Cheryl, Felix, Charlie and Lucy have sealed every window. Charlie says demonic entities are judging humanity, and the group blindfolds itself whenever anyone goes outside. A grocery run brings back supplies, and Malorie takes three live birds home with her, because the entities' presence agitates them. Another pregnant survivor, Olympia, joins them, and a stranger named Gary is let inside against Douglas's wishes.

- The film originally used real footage of the Lac-Mégantic rail disaster, which killed 47 people in Quebec on July 6, 2013. Netflix later replaced it with an outtake from a canceled U.S. TV series.
- Trent Reznor called working on Bird Box "a fucking waste of time", criticizing the producers' use of his and Atticus Ross's music and the editor's low mix of it in the film.
- The film spawned the Bird Box challenge, in which people blindfolded themselves for ordinary tasks; it caused injuries, and on January 2, 2019, the Netflix Twitter account posted a cautionary plea.
- The production used live birds on set as much as it could, and replaced them digitally in shots where the birds became agitated.
- In September 2025, Brazilian station TV Gazeta de Alagoas aired the film without permission to fill its schedule after losing its TV Globo affiliation; Netflix then sued the station.
