Plot summary
Jerry Hickfang makes plumbing fixtures at a factory and lives above a bowling alley. He has schizophrenia, and vivid hallucinations make his pets speak to him: Bosco, a good-natured dog, and Mr. Whiskers, an antisocial cat. Bosco wants him to live a normal life, and Mr. Whiskers urges him toward violence. He keeps the voices secret from Dr. Warren, the therapist appointed by the court, and his condition leaves him apart from the people he works with. He is drawn to Fiona, a coworker who does not return his feelings, and he asks her to a Chinese dinner theater. She goes to karaoke with Lisa and Alison instead.

- Marjane Satrapi and the producer set out to look for an actor to play the voices Jerry hears in his head, until Ryan made the voices on his iPhone and sent them over; Satrapi said it suddenly made sense that it could only be him.
- The script received critical praise before production, including a place on the Black List's Best Un-produced Screenplays of 2009. Mark Romanek was originally attached to direct in 2010 with Ben Stiller to star, but budget issues stopped it until Marjane Satrapi was announced as director in August 2012.
- In 2020, Reynolds said of the film: "One of my favorite movies I've ever done. Never really got its day in court, but man, it's weird and fun and beautiful."
