Plot summary
Excommunicated from the church, the young seminarian Vikar reaches Los Angeles on August 9, 1969, his head tattooed with portraits of Elizabeth Taylor and Montgomery Clift. Five murders that day in the canyons above the city briefly leave him under suspicion. He finds work at Paramount Studios, where the editor Dotty Langer notices his aptitude and brings him to a studio executive called Viking Man. At a Hollywood party, Vikar meets the actress Soledad Paladin and feels he has seen her before. When his gift for editing emerges, a singing producer named Rondell hires him to cut Soledad's newest film. Vikar becomes fixated on a secret movie, its pieces, he believes, hidden inside every film ever made.
