Biography

Rachel House is a New Zealand actor and director who graduated from the national drama school Toi Whakaari in 1992 and then worked in theater with the Auckland Theatre Company and Pacific Underground Theatre. Her screen debut came in the 1998 short Queenie and Pete, and she appeared in Whale Rider (2002). She became a frequent presence in Taika Waititi's films, with roles in Eagle vs Shark (2007), Boy (2010) and Hunt for the Wilderpeople (2016), and she voiced Gramma Tala in Moana (2016) and Terry in Soul (2020). Other credits include Topaz in Thor: Ragnarok (2017) and a regular role on Heartbreak High as Principal Stacy Woods. She has also directed theater, short films and her first feature, The Mountain, released in 2024. In 2017, she was made an officer in the New Zealand Order of Merit.

    In 2001, House received Director of the Year honors from the Chapman Tripp Theatre Awards and the New Zealand Listener Awards for her work on Mitch Tawhi Thomas' play Have Car Will Travel.

    In 2008, House attended the Prague Film School in the Czech Republic to study directing. She made two short films while she was there, titled Bravo and New Skirt.

    In 2012, House directed Toroihi rāua ko Kahira, a Māori-language Troilus and Cressida adapted by Te Haumihiata Mason. It was staged at London's Globe Theatre as part of an international series.

  4. Behind the award

    In 1995, House earned the Chapman Tripp Theatre Award as Most Promising Female Newcomer of the Year. The honor recognized her one-woman show Nga Pou Wahine, written by Briar Grace-Smith.

  5. Getting ready for a role

    House coached the young actors on the set of Taika Waititi's Boy in 2010 and provided acting coaching for young lead Julian Dennison on Hunt for the Wilderpeople in 2016.

  6. Behind the camera

    House co-directed the Maori language versions of the Disney animated films The Lion King and Moana with Tweedie Waititi of Matewa Media.
