Plot summary
In Thailand, Sam Bloom falls from a high balcony and is left partly paralyzed by the injury to her T6 thoracic vertebrae. Back in Australia, the surfer struggles to adjust to a wheelchair and to a life she can no longer live the same way. Her husband Cameron and their sons, Noah, Rueben and Oli, are with her, as is her mother Jan. Noah was the one who asked her to go up to the balcony, and he has been distant with her since. One afternoon the boys carry home an injured magpie chick and name her Penguin. Sam is at first not able to care for the bird, but she understands what Penguin means to Noah.
