Plot summary
Jennifer Rockwell, an astrophysicist in New Orleans, gives a talk on black holes and is found dead the next morning at her observatory, shot in the face. No weapon is recovered. A jar of moisturizing cream sits at the scene beside a sock. Detective Mike Hoolihan works the case. The observatory manager says he spent the night with an associate, and the sock leads Mike to Jennifer's boyfriend, who says he hurried off to develop a theory. Jennifer's house is crowded with knick-knacks. Lifting a Florida snow globe, Mike collapses and pictures blue marbles like the one strung around her neck, which she has kept since her orphan childhood without knowing where it came from. Her supervisor and co-investigator raise the .38 Caliber Killer, who shot young women years earlier and swapped knick-knacks with them.
