Max Cullen
Biography
Max Cullen is an Australian character actor of stage and screen who started out as a painter and sculptor, training at the National Art School in Sydney in 1956 and later at the Julian Ashton Art School. Born in Wellington, New South Wales, and raised in the Blue Mountains, he took up acting after seeing a play and trained under Hayes Gordon at the Ensemble Theatre, appearing there over a decade before working at the Nimrod Theatre. He is perhaps best known for the film Spider and Rose and for the television shows The Flying Doctors and Secret Valley, and for Love My Way. He played Owl Eyes in The Great Gatsby (2013) and appeared in X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009). He has also worked as an arts reporter, illustrator and cartoonist, and since 2007 has performed Lawson, a one-man show about the poet Henry Lawson.

A change of course
Before turning to acting, Max Cullen trained as a painter and sculptor at Sydney's National Art School in 1956 and at the Julian Ashton Art School in 1959, where Brett Whiteley was a fellow student.
Early training
After seeing a play, Cullen became interested in acting and trained under Hayes Gordon at the Ensemble Theatre. He later appeared there in productions across a ten-year period.
Beyond film
Cullen has performed Lawson since 2007. This one-man show is based on the life of Henry Lawson, an Australian poet.
