Plot summary
Maddie, an inland taipan, appears in zookeeper Chaz Hunt's show of dangerous animals at the Australian Wildlife Park in Sydney, and the public fears her. Jackie, a saltwater crocodile who looks out for her, tells Maddie and her three friends, the funnel-web spider Frank, the thorny devil Zoe and the marbled scorpion Nigel, about the Outback, a place marked by three mountains where creatures like them belong. When Jackie is removed from the zoo over a mishap with Chaz's son Chazzie, Maddie decides to lead the group to the Outback. During the escape, the celebrity koala Pretty Boy tries to raise the alarm and is paralyzed by Nigel, so the group takes him along, with Chaz and Chazzie in pursuit.

- Writer-director Harry Cripps had created the concept for Larrikins, a DreamWorks Animation film that was canceled; it was to have music by Tim Minchin, and the project was revived in 2018 as the short film Bilby.
- Clare Knight said executives would ask whether the lead had to be a snake because "snakes aren't huggable", and that making the animals appealing was a challenge the filmmakers took on.
