Plot summary

Grace Pudel grows up in 1970s Melbourne alongside her twin brother, Gilbert. Their father, Percy, once worked as a juggler but is now a paraplegic alcoholic, and the twins' mother did not survive their birth. Grace collects snails, and Gilbert defends her from classmates who mock her cleft lip. Percy dies in his sleep, and the siblings are sent to separate foster homes on opposite sides of the country. Grace ends up in Canberra with Ian and Narelle, a couple who are kind but frequently absent, while Gilbert goes to a religious farming family in Perth whose matriarch, Ruth, treats him harshly. Gilbert writes that he will find her once he is grown. Unable to settle into anything herself, Grace starts hoarding snail-themed objects and later befriends Pinky, an eccentric older woman.
