George Macready

Biography

George Macready was an American actor of stage, film, and television who often played polished villains, especially in Gilda (1946). He made his Broadway debut in 1926, playing Arthur Dimmesdale in a stage version of The Scarlet Letter, and appeared in fifteen plays through 1958, including The Barretts of Wimpole Street. His Shakespeare roles included Benedick in Much Ado About Nothing, Malcolm in Macbeth, and Paris in Romeo and Juliet. His first film was Commandos Strike at Dawn (1942), and he later played Younger Miles in Coroner Creek (1948) and General Paul Mireau in Paths of Glory (1957). He worked with Kirk Douglas in Detective Story (1951), Two Weeks in Another Town (1962), and Seven Days in May (1964), and took a rare comic part in The Great Race (1965). On television he guest-starred on Perry Mason and appeared as Glenn Howard in Fame Is the Name of the Game (1966). He died in 1973.

A role that slipped away
In the 1966 TV movie Fame Is the Name of the Game, Macready took the part of publishing magnate Glenn Howard. Gene Barry later took over that role when the film served as the pilot for The Name of the Game.
