Plot summary
Jack Andrus used to be an established movie star. He is an alcoholic. His wife Carlotta has divorced him, a car crash nearly killed him, and he has spent three years in a sanitarium after a nervous breakdown. Maurice Kruger, the director who was a mentor to him, is himself a has-been who now works in Italy on a movie starring Davie Drew, an up-and-coming young actor. Kruger offers Andrus a part in the film, and Andrus comes to Rome only to learn that the role is no longer his. Kruger's wife Clara shows him no pity, but he is taken on at Cinecittà Studio to help dub the actors' lines.
