Big break
Hoyt's Noël Coward impersonation was so impressive that it earned him a spot in the original Broadway cast of The Man Who Came to Dinner in 1939, where he played Beverley Carlton.
Early training
Hoyt acted with regional theater companies before becoming a member of Orson Welles's Mercury Theatre in 1937. He stayed with that troupe until his army service ended and he relocated to Hollywood in 1945.
A change of course
John Hoyt also performed as a stand-up comedian, and there were days when he did both his comedy work and his acting work.
