Chuck Hayward
Biography
Chuck Hayward was an American stuntman and actor associated with John Wayne's films. Born in Alliance, Nebraska, he grew up on his family's farm near Hyannis and left home as a teenager for the rodeo circuit, where he rode broncos and trained horses. He reached Los Angeles in 1947 seeking wrangler jobs, and in 1949 he began stunt work on The Fighting Kentuckian as Wayne's double. Hayward doubled Wayne on nearly two dozen of his films. He also doubled Western and action stars such as Marlon Brando, Yul Brynner, Steve McQueen and Gregory Peck, and had a notable role in The Big Country (1958). He later coordinated stunts for The Deadly Companions (1961) and handled stunts on The Rat Patrol, while taking small parts in many films and TV shows. He belonged to the informal John Ford Stock Company and was inducted into the Stuntmen's Hall of Fame. He stopped stunt work in 1981 and acting in 1989.

Big break

Hayward worked cattle when he was young. At 16 he left home for the rodeo circuit, where he rode broncs and trained horses, and in 1947 he came to Los Angeles looking for wrangler work on motion pictures.
Own stunts
Hayward was skilled at horseback stunts and served as a double for many stars of his era who appeared in Westerns or on horseback, among them Marlon Brando, Yul Brynner, Steve McQueen, and Gregory Peck.
About the name
Hayward was called "Good Chuck" to set him apart from "Bad Chuck", which referred to Chuck Roberson, who was another stunt double for Wayne.
Behind the camera
Hayward moved into stunt coordination, planning the stunts for movies including The Deadly Companions (1961) and the television show The Rat Patrol.
A first
Hayward belonged to the unofficial John Ford Stock Company and held a lifetime membership in the Stuntmen's Association of Motion Pictures. He was also inducted into the Stuntmen's Hall of Fame.
