Plot summary
Polish overlords rule Ukraine in the sixteenth century, and Turkish armies press against Polish forces for the same land. Taras Bulba, a Cossack colonel, settles his family on a farm under that dominion and raises his sons there. He sends Andriy and Ostap to study in Kiev so that they may learn the customs of the Poles who govern them. Andriy, the elder, becomes devoted to Natalia Dubrov, the daughter of a Polish nobleman, and the people of Kiev turn on the Cossack brothers. The brothers return to their father's farm on the steppes. Word arrives that the Poles want the Cossacks to muster an army for a new campaign.

- After financing fell through at the last minute and the film was canceled, Aldrich fell into financial trouble; in May 1959 it was announced that Joseph Kaufman had bought the script and associated research materials from him for $100,000.
